A Path of Spiritual Growth
Lesson 23: The Second Noble Truth
The origin of suffering is
tanha: “thirst” or craving
Craving drives us to:
grasp what we want,
cling to what we possess,
resist what threatens us.
“Relishing now here
and now there...”
The
satisfaction fades.
The search begins again.
Craving for Sensuality
Seeking enduring happiness
in
impermanent pleasures
Craving for Becoming
Constructing an identity
and
demanding its confirmation
Craving for Non-becoming
Trying to escape or destroy
what
we find unbearable
"Hell is other people." - Sartre,
No
Exit (1944)
Craving
(tanha) causes suffering
(dukkha)
...but how?
